| Course Objectives | The course is an introduction to Chinese economy and society. We will review the history of Chinese economy and go through some important aspects of Chinese culture. The focus of the course is China’s economic reform, opening and development since 1979. Some key questions will be addressed in the course include: what are basic features of China? How is the Chinese economy structured? How has this structure changed overtime? How did the CCP change the structure of the economy when it came to power in 1949? What is the current relationship between the private and public sectors, and how has this changed since 1979? What about township/village enterprises? The course investigates the transformation of Chinese economy, especially since 1979, and analyzes the political and economic reasons behind the transformation and the politics of the transformation. The instruction of the course is organized into lectures, discussions, and field trips. The aim is to help students to gain a comprehensive understanding of Chinese economy and its transformation. | |

| Teacher | Mao Zhongming, Professor, Vice dean of College of International Exchange, Shanghai University Mao’s major is English Linguistics and got his Master degree in Warwick University in 1986. He went to HEC Canada in 1997-1998 and Westminster in 2004 as the Visiting Professor. Professor Mao has profound research on the change of Chinese society and economy in time of China’s reform. In addition, He also has research on the relationship between the development of China and the world. | |
